How to approach NET exam in Mass Communication and Journalism

For candidates appearing for National Eligibility Test in Mass communication and Journalism. Some directions may help others students also.

For tackling the exam, Use a three pronged strategy.
Suggested Books
  • Mass Communication In India by Keval J Kumar -gives an overall view much needed for the exam
  • Mass Media Research: An Introduction by Roger D. Wimmer & Joseph R. Dominick - is a very useful book for research aptitude in Paper I, Mass Media Research in Paper II and III
  • McQuail's Mass Communication Theory by Dennis McQuail - helps you get the basics of theories and especially terms and names for Paper II and clear concepts for Paper III.
  • Any other book u feel apt.
Know the exam well

Paper I deals with general knowledge, Teaching and Research aptitude, reasoning, etc while paper-II deals with the subject.

(Instructions are based on requirements of general candidates)

  • Each question carries two marks. That means you should mark at least 25 questions correct in Paper I ( u need only 20 correct answers to get the stipulated 40, but having an additional 10 correct will help ur leverage in Paper-II)
  • Get the at least same number of questions correct for Paper-II as well.
  • Attend all the questions if there is no negative marks.  - bcz UGC keeps on changing its stand about negative marks. It was there in 2009 December exam and was removed just days before exam in June 2010. in December 2010, negative mark is not included yet, less likely to change.

Paper III is evaluated only if you get the group minimum (ie 100 marks at least) for Paper I and II together with at least 40 each (for general candidates. others refer the table above)

Paper III should be approached with a three pronged strategy
  1. Dont leave any question unattended( ie answer all the questions- Most important)
  2. Give in-depth answers as much as possible ( they say they dont give marks for superficial answers)
  3. Be clear about concepts and substantiate your answer using reliable references.
Glance previous question papers
  • Go through all the previous question papers and prepare based on that.
  • This is one of the most effective strategy for Paper II . Helps to some extent in Paper III also.

  2. Thanks so much for sharing the information. How much minimum preparation time does it takes to crack the exam? If I start preparing now can I hope to clear the June exam or will it be advisable to appear only in December?

    Regards
